Today, I finally got back to the keyboard and starting working on a new attempt at that scene I had started last weekend. Last time around, I had a solid writing session in terms of word output, but realized afterwards that everything I had written was unnecessary. I had just been trying to force in some character observations to set the scene and, as a result, had about 1000 words that did nothing for the story.
Today, after my first week of studies of The Scene Book and with a slightly better understanding that my novel can incorporate both narrative and scenes to get the job down, I sat down to approach the same part of the story, but this time using narrative to set the scene and not starting the scene itself until the point were there was going to be some action/decision that was meaningful to the story.
I like the way it turned out and hope that I can keep it up like this. I’ve only just gotten into to the actual scene part, and that’s where I struggle the most, so we’ll see how that goes in my next writing session!
