During today’s dictation session – 50 minutes this time – I finished my secondary opponent’s character profile and started on her interview. As is my curious wont, I got right up to the last four questions of her interview just as I got home, so I will have to wrap those up next time.
As I’ve been interviewing her, my third and final opponent, the pointy one, if you will, has come into focus. I have ended up with a three-tiered opposition structure. There is the arch-opponent that I wrote first, who set this plan in motion, the opponent I am writing now, who actually made it happen for her own reasons, and finally, the last opponent will be the one actually doing the dirty work in the story. I think she’s going to be fun to write.
That third opponent is going to be my last major character to profile for this book. And the truth is that I may have already profiled too many. After her, I still need to fill out a supporting cast (which means going through the agonizing task of names, physical descriptions, and personalities on a short cycle), and then I have to move on to the next phase of the writing process . . . which means that I need to go back to my notes and figure out what that next phase was supposed to be, anyway.
But first, I need to finish this interview and write that next character, so it’s going to be a few days before I get there.
