Yesterday, after my post, I secured a bit of extra time and through it back into my coaching project, thinking I could get it off my plate and get back to writing. . . only to have my client get back to me in under 24 hours. So much for that. This morning’s time was lost to coaching again.
I also got some reading done and dug into The Cleaner by Mark Dawson. I’ve been listening to Mark and James on the Self Publishing Show for years now and I wanted to see the kind of writing it takes to start a career that brings in seven figures per year.
My initial reaction is that it’s all about the story. The story is king and the writing just has to get it across – which means I am worrying far too much about the wordsmithing of my own book – especially for the first draft.
This book had repeated sentences with the exact same structure, or starting with the same words. There were plenty of adjectives in the descriptions.
And I didn’t care.
I got sucked into the story. The pacing is excellent, balancing that description with action. There are entire scenes to convey a single action or significant event.
It was enough for me to think I’m worrying way way too much about the writing. (When I get back to my story) I need to hit the words with the memory that the story is all that matters.
