So, I don’t have nearly as tight an outline for my non-fiction work in progress as I do for fiction. Essentially, I have section titles and quotes from my research pasted into the document, and today, after missing two consecutive sessions of non-fiction writing and forgetting where I was, that came back to bite me.
I had a research note that applied to multiple sections of my book, but I had forgotten that only about half of it should apply to the part I was writing before I was interrupted. I tried to stuff the whole thing in, but it just didn’t fit and I ended up burning about half of my writing session before I realized what had gone wrong.
I guess that moving forward, I need to make slightly more detailed notes about what I want to accomplish in each section of the non-fiction work before I start, to protect myself from interruptions like this.
