Yesterday, I printed out my manuscript at the local convenience store and I have started taking a blue pen to it (I really ought to have picked up a red one while I was at that convenience store). This morning, I got through the Preface section, which is pretty much standard throughout all of my books in this series and didn’t need many changes. Next time, I’ll start in with the content chapters.
I like to print out my manuscript and hand-write my edits in it. I find that if I try to edit while reading in Scrivener, I am tempted to start changing things on the fly, and don’t always read through the entire chapter first. It often happens that I think “Oh! I should have said X here” and write it in, only to find out that I had already written in two sentences later. Scribbling on paper with a pen seems to save me from that pitfall.
In this pass, I am primarily looking at content, not spelling, grammar, and wordsmithing, but I also want to make sure I am expressing myself clearly, so there will be some line edits. With non-fiction, I am more comfortable lumping them together because I know there are not going to be significant changes in the content or structure of the book as there might be for my fiction work. I suppose that’s a matter of experience, and I look forward to getting there with my fiction, as well!
