B1P Day 173: Covers, My Nemesis – Author Dad

B1P Day 173: Covers, My Nemesis

One of the steps that I freely admit that I got wrong in my initial attempt at this story was the mock book cover. This is part of the How to Write a Bestseller Course process of creating a book package in advance, but like most authors (I think), the cover process is repellent and alien.

I am terrible at figuring out what makes a good cover and my first novelette was ample evidence of that.

Last time around, I picked a few images that I thought were related to my title (which, if you’ll recall, I have since decided was too dark), but really, by the time I picked them, I had spent far more time than I was willing to on the process and basically just gave up and picked something that was “close enough” so that I could move on with the writing. That really undermines the process.

So, this time around, I am going to buckle down and do some comp research to similar books to what I want to write. I also know more about being careful about the tone I project with the image color, etc, so I am going to try to look for that.

Right now, I am only in the research phase, so I have no idea if I’ll end up getting frustrated and giving up in the end, but for now, at least, I’m going to give it a good shot. In the worst case scenario, maybe I’ll just grab the covers of a few comp titles and use those as my visual reference.

Take part in the journey!
