Yesterday, after a disappointing morning where I only got a single paragraph written, I took my bluetooth keyboard to work to type on my phone over lunch. I only made a little bit of progress, but I think that was a combination of still getting used to the mobile version of Scrivener and my writing for the day being a setting description, which I’m not particularly practiced at, yet. Still, it was better than nothing.
This morning, I continued that setting description, using it as an opportunity to picture the city where my story starts, then moved on to specifically describing the castle where the action begins. I don’t want to go into too much detail because it’s no spoiler that the castle is destroyed early in the book.
I don’t yet know what details I really need to know about by settings, but the layouts seem important. I need to be able to picture my characters’ movements and what they would observe about the spaces they spend time in. I also have to be able to describe the settings in enough detail in my narrative to inspire readers’ imaginations to fill in the gaps on their own. I don’t want to get too bogged down in the details.
I think I’ll do a handful more major settings, but not worry about the minor ones for now.
