B1P Day 230: Starting Scenes is Easier

Starting scenes always seems easiest. I have a blank slate and do not need to worry about trying to pick up from what I was in the middle of writing two days prior. I can just look at my notes, imagine the scene, and start going.

I also tend to start with description of the scene and my hero’s starting attitude, so I can avoid my nemesis of dialog.

Today’s scene is the first one that take place outside of the castle, so I wanted to work in description of the city, as well as it’s social dimensions that shape the way my character sees the world. It’s my last scene of setting the “ghost” and “story world” before the inciting incident, which comes right at its end.

Today, setting the scene was fun, but I fear I am setting myself up for a difficult writing session next time. I got a few paragraphs in then doubled back to write in a little extra description earlier – but I haven’t finished connecting that with the onward flow. I suspect I’ll kick myself for that later.

I think, too, that one of my biggest challenges with this writing process is that I haven’t been able to keep my story in my mind between writing sessions. If I could be thinking about it in the meantime, then I think it would be easier to get back into each time. But I am typically so stressed about my day job that it occupies my thoughts whenever my mind is at rest, which is a terrible way to live.
