B1P Day 116: More Rain – Author Dad

B1P Day 116: More Rain

I’m inside again, typing on my phone. I am finding that to be slightly easier for picking up scenes partway through, but in the long run, I want to keep up the dictation practice. I think that’s going to serve me better.

Today, I finished a cut scene away from the hero’s situation that tells the readers that the hero is in peril that she doesn’t know about, and foreshadows the first plot point – the decision she is going to have to face in another scene or two that will require that whole passing the threshold thing.

When I write scenes like this, I always worry. I can never tell if I’m being a little heavy-handed with the reveals or, if, on the opposite side I’m not revealing enough, since there is far more information in my head than on the page.

I think that the best solution will be working with an editor once I have finished this first book and before I publish it. While that’s going to cost – and my accounts just took a major hit when I bought that new computer – if I want to be serious about this as a career and developing my skill, I think it’s a necessary step from the education standpoint.

But first, I have to finish this book.

The first plot point is as far ahead as I had given thought to how scenes might actually play out, and without Scrivener to outline, I’m kind of winging it here. It will be interesting to see how these scenes compare to the ones where I had my full notes at my disposal and what that might reveal about potential improvements to my writing process!

Take part in the journey!
